About The Author

Paul Ross

Paul Ross is a Yorkshireman by birth and temperament, shaped by candlelit evenings during Britain’s three-day week and an early fascination with history, travel, and how other people live. His professional life led him into global engineering and business development, a career that inadvertently funded decades of travel to places most guidebooks politely ignore.

Saudi Arabia first entered Paul’s life in the mid 1990s through work, but his curiosity quickly replaced commercial purpose. What began as a routine market visit became a long-running relationship with the often misunderstood country. Over many years, Paul travelled extensively across the Kingdom, not as a tourist, but as an observer with time to listen, get lost, and be corrected.

A lifelong interest in archaeology and history, and a quiet admiration for legendary travellers such as Ibn Battuta and T. E. Lawrence, shaped both his routes and his reflections. Encouraged by friendships formed on the road, and inspired by writers like Bill Bryson, who proved that travel writing could be both informative and funny, he began recording the moments that defined his journeys.

A Funny Thing Happened to Me in Saudi Arabia grew out of notebooks filled during years of work, wandering, and waiting for things to happen. Paul continues to travel, observe, and write, still convinced that the best stories belong to the people who welcomed him along the way.
